After a little debate, I decided to go for a run tonight and ended up with a PR for 5k distance! So awesome! I think this was just what I needed to get myself psyched back up for running and training!

Wow, it’s been quite a while since the last update; sorry to those of you who are following me. Wait, how many of you are following me, anyways? Do I need a poll? I think I do!
So, here’s what’s been going on since the last update. The race is this coming Saturday and not only that, but my Mom is visiting! I’m very excited for Mom to visit. I haven’t seen her since Christmas and, I’m thrilled that she’ll be able to see me run a big race! Anyways, Friday night, after work, we drove up to the Road Runner Sports store in Columbia, MD to pick up our “packets” for the Baltimore 10 Miler. I put the quotes around packets because, well, it was really just the bib. We get our swag and two free beers after the race. I love beer and I love free beer even more.
I’m looking forward to a week of easier training and the race to be over, but have to keep my eye on the Marine Corp Marathon on October 31. Training is going to have to really ramp up once this race is over and after I have a few days off ;-).
In other news, while at the Road Runner Sports store, I scored a sweet Orange CamelBak. I’ve been wanting one of these for a while now and with the discount I get for being VIP at Road Runner Sports, I got it for $36!
Check it out…
I ran with it tonight and loved it! I was a bit concerned that it would jostle around and annoy me, but I was quite surprised that it stayed in place and did it’s job. Speaking of tonight’s run, wow, it was rough. I think the temperature was still around 89° when I left, and even though it cooled down some while I was out there, it was still HOT! I guess I don’t really mind running in the heat, my body will adjust, but before it begins to adjust it royally screws up my time! Check out how bad my timing was tonight over on my RunKeeper profile (link).
So, I’ve really been slacking a lot lately. I mean A LOT! A big part of it was because I’ve been trying to figure out how to balance life, work, softball (I joined the company softball team this season) and running; I was worried that I’d have to quite the team so that I could keep up on my training schedule.
Well, the other day I was thinking (I know, scary thought) and I came up with a way that I could change my training days to accommodate softball. Historically, my running days were Monday/Wednesday/Thursday/Saturday with Saturday being my long run. So, now I’ve changed my running schedule to Tuesday/Thursday/Friday/Sunday with Sunday being the long run. I think this’ll work out well, but I sure will be busy.
So, what about that milestone? Well, since August 2009, I’ve run 201.46 miles! I’ve surpassed the 200 mile mark! This is great news! Now, my next goal is to get those miles racked up even more as I progress in my marathon training.

I’ve finally decided on a training program the marathon. It’s detailed in a book called “The Non-Runner’s Marathon Trainer” recommended by my friend Carlos. Carlos has run several marathons, so I trust his recommendations. What’s great about this program is that it’s not just a physical training program. It helps you overcome the mental obstacles that a lot of people have when attempting to run long distances. Since I’ve already run a half marathon recently, I’m not concerned about staying true to the beginning of the program. I am going to start off with shorter distances, 3-4 miles for the first couple of weeks, just to get back into the swing of things, then go full force into the program.
I’m feeling pretty good about things so far and I’m confident I can actually complete the marathon. My main area of concern is the pain I’ve had in my knees. I’m hoping that the cross training I’m doing in conjunction with the running will help. We’ll see.
Tonight, I did a short run of approximately 3.16 miles. Here’s a link to the run on RunKeeper – http://rnkpr.com/a53bot
